Measuring Heart Rate Recovery

Writer's picture: Stenzel Chiropractic ClinicStenzel Chiropractic Clinic

In our article, "Exercise and Heart Rate: Where should I start?", we talked a little bit about Heart Rate Recovery. We wanted to give you more detail how to appropriately measure Heart Rate Recovery and what it means.

  1. Make sure you know your Calculated Maximum Heart Rate for Your Age, which is 220 - your age.

  2. At the end of your workout, make sure your heart rate is at least 70% of your Calculated Maximum Heart Rate.

  3. When you finish your final exercise, take note of your heart rate.

  4. Make a note of your heart rate 1 minute after exercise, and 2 minutes after exercise.

What is considered a "normal" Heart Rate Recovery?

Many studies vary in an exact number which is considered “normal”. However, when putting many studies together, a 12 beats per minute decrease after one-minute seems to be considered a “normal” benchmark.
